Two of my favorite things in life are baseball and alternative history.
Baseball will always be my favorite sport. It was my first love growing up and has remained so, even as football as become the country's favorite sport. Why, I don't know. I love the history of the game and I love the New York Mets. My dream job would be to be the General Manager of the Mets.
As for alternative history, I love the 'what if' of the genre. What if the black plague wiped out 99% of Europe, what if the south had machine guns during the Civil War, what if the Chinese colonized western North America in the early 15th century?
Wouldn't it be great if there was some way to combine the two? If I could create an alternate baseball timeline where I am the GM of the Mets? In reality, isn't this every baseball fans dream? To make the decisions for the team they love? To make sure they don't do something stupid. Like give Jason Bay $44 million dollars.
Luckily. I found a way to combine the two. For years I had been looking for a decent baseball simulator I could use to quickly get to the next year, because that's what being a Mets fan is all about. Waiting til next year.
Since I've become a Mets fan, they've had three 'good' periods (I define good as consecutive seasons above 500). Sixteen winning seasons since 1977. That's a lot of "waiting til next years". When they are good, the Mets are good consecutively, conversely this means they are bad for consecutive seasons as well. I've suffered through sub-500 teams for stretches of 7 seasons, 6, 3 and now 6 again.
Those are full calendar years I've waited. Over 35 years. With a sim, I could be 10 years into the future over the course of a long afternoon.
About three years ago I picked up Out of the Park 9 Baseball Simulator on Steam for like $5. It was already 3 versions out of date (hence the price). The current version sells for $49.99 and I wasn't prepared to drop that kind of money on a sim I may not like. I've been burned in the past with bad sims and didn't want to make the same mistake.
So I took a risk, grabbed OOTP9 and began my career as GM of the Mets (and Emperor of Baseball) right after the 2007 World Series ended. I figured I'd play a season or two, find out if I liked it and then buy the most recent version when it came out.
Yeah, that didn't happen. I'm about to enter my 20th season as Mets GM (yes, its 2027) and it couldn't be a better time to be a Mets fan. In this alternate universe they have had thirteen straight good seasons (above 500) and counting.
As the Emperor of Baseball I've expanded the game to 36 teams, scattered across 4 continents, with plans to go to 40 teams in the next 3-5 seasons. There are minor league teams in dozens of countries and major league All-Stars are now born in places like Brazil, Czechoslovakia and San Marino. [Look it up, I had to.]
This is for every one who has ever wanted to run a baseball team. This is for every Mets fan.
I'll start this right after the 2026 World Series. The 2027 season would be the 20th in the sim era and I was heading into the what was going to be one of my most interesting seasons ever as both GM of the Mets and Emperor of Baseball.
Finally, if you want to know how some of your favorite players did, or how your team has done in the sim era, please ask. I am happy to share.
If you want me to name your teams first pick after your child, sure. If you want a minor league team in your hometown, no problem. I'll do it, and more.
Also, any and all questions/comments are welcome, about the game, baseball in general, anything really.
