2027 MARCH 30th - APRIL 14th

The Mets open the season as the favorite to win the NL East and contend for the best record in baseball. Again. They have averaged 101 wins over the past 7 seasons.

[3.30.27] – Giants 10, Mets 5 – The Mets open the season on the road and Fisher gets shelled 2ip 7h 7er 2bb 2k 1hr and the Mets can't climb out of an 8-4 deficit after three innings. They do hit four home runs, two by Smith, one by Brooks and Caraballo.

[3.31.27] – Mets 7, Giants 6 – Another Mets starter fails to get past the second inning as Fulton allows a pair of two run home runs in the first inning. Finley hits a 2-run shot in the sixth to tie it 6-6. An 8th inning sac fly by Pruitt drives home the winning run. Alvarez escapes a 1-out bases-loaded jam in the 8th with the second double play of the game. Rushton pitches the ninth for his first save.

Cliff Dorsey, 24-year old Boston Red Sox center fielder goes 6-for-8 in a 15-inning 7-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers. All 6 hits are singles.

Eugene Baker, 37yo Texas Rangers dh/1b collects his 2000th hit. He was the third person drafted in the first round of the 2008 draft (my first sim draft) right out of Springdale (AR) HS.
He finally made the bigs in 2013 as a Kansas City Royal and stayed until 2020, the year the franchise moved to Korea to become the Seoul Empire Baseball Team. His best year for the franchise was 2016 when he hit 327/400/574 39hr 120r 201h and finished 4th in the MVP voting. The two-time All Star looked on track for HOF, but an injury riddled 2019 slowed him down just enough to make him a fringe candidate, especially as 75% of his at bats are as a dh. Second all time franchise leader in hr (211), behind only George Brett (317), also second in strikeouts.
He didn't like the food in Korea and ended up being traded to the Atlanta Braves. He ended up at first base and was the final piece of the puzzle that season and the Braves won the World Series. It's still his only trip to the WS.
Baker signed in Vancouver in 2021 and then was traded to Mexico in 2022. He finally landed in Texas in 2023 and has been there since, having a late renaissance by having an outstanding 2024 at the age of 34. He hit 296/385/527 38hr 120rbi, hit a couple of milestones (1000 rbi, 300 hr), hit for the cycle and had a 3hr 8rbi game.

[4.1.27] – Giants 2, Mets 1 – The Mets finally get a good outing from a starter, as Gardner ends up pitching a complete game, but takes the loss. Cruising along in the bottom of the 8th with a three hit shutout, he throws what he thinks is strike three to end the inning. It's called a ball and the next pitch he throws is lined into right field. He appears shaken because the next pitch he throws is smoked down the left field line and into the seats, giving the Giants a 2-1 lead. The Mets leave 10 men on base, including having two on in the top of the ninth.
The Mets 3-4-5 hitters went 4-31 in the series and that includes Smith's two home runs in the first game. Two Mets starters have eras over 31.00 and the one that pitched the best got a loss, at least he rested the pen in the third game who had thrown 14 (of 17) innings in the first two games. Brooks on the other hand loves SF pitching, going 7-13. The Mets are two games back in the NL East already.

[4.2.27] – Mets 7, Phillies 3 – The Mets return home and this time it is Williamson (1-0) going the distance. He settles down after allowing a first inning 2-run home run and is helped out by double plays in the 7th and 8th innings. The Mets get the two-out hits they couldn't yesterday and Short has three hits and three rbis, Caraballo (2) hits a solo shot in the fifth.

Maaik Baas, the 35-yo Dutch born shortstop hit his 400th career home run.

Jeff Hansen, the 40-yo former Met collected his 2000th career hit in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. The former Mets outfielder from 2012 until he was traded during the 2024 season is still well loved in New York. He was the third guy I drafted in my first season. I hated having to trade him. His name is all over the Mets franchise top 10s. Games played, hits, rbis, runs and leads the franchise in strikeouts, by a large margin.

[4.3.27] – Mets 4, Phillies 3 – Finley (2) hits a 3-run shot in the 6th to put the Mets up 3-2. Marquez (1-0) goes 6.2ip 5h 2er 6bb 8kk in his debut and gets the win. Rushton makes in interesting in the 9th by going single, double, wild pitch to open the inning and the tying run is on third with no outs. He picks up his second save with a grounder back to the pitcher, strike out, pop out to end the game. The Mets are above 500.

[4.4.27] – Mets 9, Phillies 5 – The Mets complete the sweep. Smith (3) has three hits, including a home run and drives in four. Pruitt has three hits and short scores three times. Fisher (1-1) goes 6 innings and the bullpen throws three scoreless.
Smith drags his average up above 300, but Scalfaro and Gonzalez are still mired in slumps, they're a combined 5-48 with zero extra base hits.
The starters respond, each of them pitches at least 6 innings. The Mets (4-2) trail the Braves by a game in the NL East.

[4.5.27] – Lobos 8, Mets 3 – Fulton (0-1) gets knocked around again 5ip 9h 5er 3bb 5k and the Lobos get 14 hits and end the brief three game winning streak.

[4.6.27] – Lobos 7, Mets 2 – Gardner (0-2) can't get past the second inning as he allows a 2-run homer in each of his two innings. Caraballo (3) hits his third solo shot of the season.

The Mexico Aztecs defeat the Seoul Empire 9-5 in 16 innings. Aztec catcher Rafael Hernandez tied it in the top of 9th at 5 with a 3-run home run. They score 4 in the top of the 16th to go up 9-5.

[4.7.27] – Lobos 9, Mets 8 – Another Mets starter shelled, Williamson 1.1ip 7h 6er 1bb 0k 3hr and its 6-0 Lobos after two innings. The Mets get five in the 4th, including a pair on Scalfaro's first long ball of the season. They add three more in the 7th on a ground out, a wild pitch and a walk to go up 8-6. Alvarez allows a 2-run home run to rookie Ippolito Vasario, an Italian, whose idol was Scalfaro, to tie the game at 8. Rushton (0-1) throws a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th to give the Lobos a 9-8 lead and the Mets go weakly in the 9th and are swept. They tumble back under 500 (4-5) and into last place in the NL East.

[4.8.27] – Mets 9, Astros 6 – The Mets return home and the starter again gets shelled, Marquez 3.2ip 5h 5er 2bb 4k 2hr, but their bats are more active. They take advantage of an error in the second inning to score 3 unearned runs to go up 4-1. A Pruitt (1) homer extends the lead to 5-1 before Marquez allows a grand slam to tie the game in the top of the fourth.
A bases-clearing double by Gene Hayes (starting for the struggling Gonzalez) pushes the lead back to 8-5 and Sheppard (1-0) pitches 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and Rushton picks up save number 3.

[4.9.27] – Astros 7, Mets 4 – The Mets suffer their first home loss of the season. Fisher pitches well, 7ip 7h 4er 3bb 4k, and got his era under 10 on the season, but gets a no decision. The big blow was a 3-run homer allowed by LeBlanc in the top of the ninth, but the loss went to Alvarez (0-1) who put the first runner on base that inning.

[4.10.27] – Mets 7, Astros 4 – Fulton (1-1) has his best game of the season (8ip 4h 4er 5bb 11k 1hr) and the Mets win the series as Smith (4) and Scalfaro (2) hit home runs in the same game for the first time this season. The Mets have allowed an NL high 23 home runs. This marks just the third game this season when the opposing team hasn't scored at least 1 run in the first 3 innings of the game.
The Mets return to 500 (6-6) and are 2 games behind the Braves.

Due to struggles from Scalfaro and Gonzalez, manager Alan Benes shakes up the lineup
cf-Brooks R
ss-Pruitt L
1b-Smith S
3b-Caraballo R
c-Scalfaro S
lf-Finley L
2b-Short R
rf-Gonzalez L

Its the first time in years that Scalfaro hasn't directly followed Smith in the lineup. Moving Pruitt to the 2-hole also makes the lineup more lefty/righty balanced. Let's see if it helps.

[4.12.27] – Brewers 5, Mets 2 – Gardner (0-3) strikes out 10 in 7.2ip but allows a tie-breaking home run in the 8th and the Mets new lineup is unable to respond. It doesn't do poorly, all the starters get a hit (all singles), but they leave 8 men on base AND ground into four double plays.

San Diego Padres 30-year old second baseman Guillermo Murillo hits 3 home runs.

[4.13.27] – Brewers 6, Mets 2 – Williamson (1-1) is hammered again 3ip 6h 5er 5bb 0k and the revamped lineup struggles with producing extra base hits; two doubles, nine singles today and another 11 men left on base.

Manuel Cabrera hits for the cycle. The Washington Nationals 22-year old rookie was the number 11 pick back in 2022. Despite having a very good rookie season, he is traded to the Mexico Aztecs for 19yo first base prospect Matt Bates.

The sim does weird things like that, trade very good rookies during the season.

[4.14.27] – Brewers 9, Mets 1 – Another starter is shelled, Fisher (1-2) 2.1ip 7h 6r 5er 2bb 1k 1hr and the Mets are swept for the second time this month and fall to 1-8 on the road.
The Mets are 6-9, four games behind the Braves.
